- Look for real butter with at least 80-82% milk fat.
- Check ingredient lists for pure milk cream or butter culture.
- Avoid products listing palm oil, canola oil, or other vegetable oils, plus hidden synthetic colorants or emulsifiers.
- Be cautious of synthetic colorants like beta-carotene if you prefer natural coloring.
- Watch for suspiciously low prices or reduced package sizes.
- Use official resources like the Tarım ve Orman Bakanlığı's taklit/tağşiş listesi (food fraud list) for updated information.
Examples of not recommended butter
-
1Spreadable Blends and Tub Margarines
- Examples: Sana spreadable, Sana Classic, Şok Market's "Bizim" brand vegetable tub margarine and packaged margarine products.
- Content: High proportion of refined vegetable oils such as palm oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil; water; emulsifiers; synthetic flavorings; beta-carotene colorants.
- Problem: Contains no pure milk cream at all — it's entirely a vegetable oil and water emulsion, made with unhealthy refined seed oils.
-
2Ülker Teremyağı
- Content: 60-70% blend of palm, canola, and sunflower oil, high water content, emulsifiers, butter flavoring, beta-carotene colorant.
- Problem: Not real butter, but a standard vegetable margarine. The milk component is only 1-2%, consisting of milk powder or whey derivatives.
-
3Lurpak Spreadable Butter (Imported Product)
- Content: 64% butter, 26% refined canola oil, water, lactic culture, and salt.
- Problem: A third of it is seed oil and water. Despite being sold at real-butter prices, it contains a significant proportion of vegetable oil.
-
4Becel Classic and Becel Olive Oil Series
- Content: High proportion of processed vegetable oils, water, thickeners; olive oil content around 15-20%.
- Problem: Technically a margarine; lacks the highly bioavailable components found in natural butter.
-
5Some Economy-Segment Butters
- Examples: BİM's Dost butter, A101's Mülkten butter, Şok's Miss butter.
- Problem: Common use of whey cream; flat flavor profile, high acidity; sometimes flavored with flavor enhancers. Quality fluctuations occur.
-
6Unlabeled or "Village Butter" Products Sold Loose
- Problem: Found to be mixed with vegetable margarine, potato starch, or animal suet. Prices are much lower than real butter, which is a sign of fraud.
- Margarines and spreadable blends containing vegetable oil are not a substitute for real butter and are a health risk.
- Cheap and unlabeled products are generally fraudulent and low quality.
- Imported spreadable butter blends also contain a significant proportion of vegetable oil despite their high prices.
- To buy real butter, read the ingredient list carefully and avoid the products above.
